Myles Haselhorst (Editor) - Women I Never Knew No. 1

Women I Never Knew No. 1
Myles Haselhorst (Editor)
5 x 7 in.
67 pages, 32 photographs
Edition of 100
$25 for standard copy/$75 for signed copy with vintage photograph

"Women I Never Knew No. 1 is the first in an ongoing series of publications that explore sexuality & nudity in found photography. The title itself is both a play on words & the statement of a simple fact: I never knew these women until I found photographs of them. Inherent in the act of collecting found photography is an element of voyeurism, of stumbling upon the record of a moment that we are not supposed see. When the photograph in question is sexual or erotic, the sense of invading a moment that was essentially private is heightened. This dichotomy of a private act made public through a mix of amateur photography & passing time is fascinating. It compels us to assume that by the very act of taking these photographs the people in them (& the photographer) wanted them to eventually be seen, evening if the moment of unveiling took decades."

"interfering with peaceful delusion is the first common project of the artists Céline Marique and Daniel Piaggio Strandlund. Their sensual vision of the interference between organic and non-organic matter in the urban context show the poetry of dissonance. The graphic and print process pursue this idea pointing out the visual noise of the images in particular by integrating a part of accident, of non-control."

"Out of fear for a foreign attack, the Albanian Stalinist leader Enver Hoxha built approximately 750.000 visible bunkers during his reign (1945-1985). Today, their massive presence seems to impress mainly foreigners. The Albanians prefer to look to the future, instead of the past. Even though a possible accession to the EU might take another ten years, the population of Albania feel they are ready for it. Within this documentary, the bunkers serve as a guide to illustrate the development of a European country that was the last to step away from communism and started the difficult journey to become part of the capitalistic West."

Jackson writes in the book's foreword, 'we are captivated by a sense of stillness & timelessness. Each image, whether depicting something man-made or containing a face, exists as a still life. Flesh is mutely rendered as if the skin of some exotic fruit. Objects take on the somber persona of a timeworn visage.'"

Handbook to the Stars attempts to visualize the infinitely flexible and tricky associative capacity of our brain. Following inner voices, he reveals and gives proof to deep, unknown and invisible relations and conspiracies. (written by Gergely László)"

"'Einmal ist Keinmal (once is never)-What happens but once, might as well not have happened at all.If we have only one life to live,we might as well not have lived at all'―'The Unbearable Lightness of Being,'Milan Kundera― It is about freezing a single moment that will never recur and looking at it again and again. It is about capturing a moment which never happened at all through a camera lens. Or it may be an act of capturing a sole and precious moment. Attempting to perfectly preserve a certain moment, or trying to accurately convey a message, is impossible. But for the photographers, it's a good thing. Maybe photography is simply a means to connect with people. Or maybe it is merely a symbol for the things we perceive. So what is photography? That remains a mystery. A certain moment will never recur, ever again. That being said, although everything seems accidental, surely nothing happens by sheer chance.(Mika Kitamura)"

"In bringing together the work of North American artists Jen Davis, Cara Philips & Stacey Tyrell in the current exhibition, Gazed Upon, curator & artist Amy Elkins asks the viewer to interrogate his or her own sense of looking. We are presented with three artists who challenge standard notions of “beauty” & perception, causing a schism between what we think we see & how we might read or interpret it. Along these lines, we, as viewers, are directed through the title of the exhibition to employ the gaze, that loaded Lacanian term that piles all of our potency & desires onto the “object” upon which we gaze. These artists, working in different media & different shooting styles all dance with this complex set of ideas about the role of the observer, how the gaze, itself, is employed & how it might reflect back on an audience." - Sarah Palmer (from the book essay)

The ongoing war and instability in Afghanistan - justified in the name of international security yet sweetened with fleeting glimpses of domestic peace, development and prosperity - continues to diminish the hope of the Afghan people, who have been caught up in this endless conflict of interests and struggles for money, power, and control. Stories of ordinary Afghans deserve to be both told and seen in order to remind us what the real images of war and poverty - of lives far from ordinary - look like."

Type: 3-zine set, zine trilogy
Printing: Laserjet on newsprint
Number of pages: 108
Dimensions: 5.5"x8.5", 14cm x 21.6cm
Price: $25

Chinese Bondage in Peru is a collection of found photographs, printed matter and accompanying text organized around the vague fictitious narrative of a North American journalist's travels between the the continents of Latin America and Asia.  While the title of the series is taken from an academic publication on the exploitation of Chinese migrant laborers in Peruvian guano pits by 19th century colonists, in the context of these images it might just as easily refer to the Sendero Luminoso, a group of Maoist inspired revolutionaries organizing indigenous Peruvians to overthrow the country's government, or to the questionable role currently played by Chinese investors in Peru's mineral extraction sector.  While constructed from "real" ephemera of vernacular image production, the work is anything but documentary, taking its cues instead from sources such as Japanese "pink films" and the french photo-anthropology magazine "Zoom."

Mathias Grate - Before Silence

Before Silence
Mathias Grate
Afterword by Mikael Timm
64 pages
Soft cover, thread bound
6¾x8½" / 170 x 217 mm
Edition of 500
Tritone Offset
$34.50

"Mathias Grate’s photographs are less moments of touching down in time than keystrokes in an ongoing script of compressed experience. They seem to be drawn from a journey in the same unfamiliar landscape, a zone (to use a Tarkovskian association) which borders, on the one side, on everyday life and on the other on all that is timeless, other-worldly. (...) The subjects in this series from the zone could provoke grief. But they have been so gently developed (exposed feels like far too brutal a word) that, instead, they are comforting. Exhibited one after the other on a wall they form a short film of still images on the subject of tenderness. On the subject of that which takes place between the words."
