"Prepare to be taken down to the deep, dark recesses of the manmade megalith that is the industrial rock quarry. Turns out it’s not actually as spooky and soot-filled as we might imagine – in fact it’s a thing of wonder, full of infinite ladders, sunlit stone facades and pools of liquid turquoise. Open Space Office is a series of landscapes, which portray the existence of man as a constructive, reconstructive and contemplative being. Representing a reality that suffers an ongoing daily process of rapid transformation. It is dialogue between the nature and man’s action, between harmony in a texturised cutting and what develops in it."

"The word Huldufólk translates to hidden people, who are said to inhabit the lava fields, stone piles, boulders, and hills of Iceland. These enchanted spots are called Álagablettur, or power places, and they offer the secretive and dark landscape the Huldufólk require. Tales point to the Huldufólk protecting humans who respect their domain. But they are also territorial, and are known to defend their homes from human intrusion. The Álagablettur of Iceland are places of an ancient struggle. These photos are a documentation, a record of what remains of history, and the proof of the Huldufólk's continuing legacy."

Erik Schubert - How to Win Friends and Influence People

How to Win Friends and Influence People
Erik Schubert
Published by Lavalette, 2013
Artist book
88 pages
Edition of 250
Pricing:
$45
$55 Signed
$125 Special Edition with print

"Borrowing an infamous title as the starting point for his first artist book, Erik Schubert considers how our appetite for success shapes our visual world. His photographs depict lonely interiors, defective products, and studies of ephemera culled from expositions, infomercial sets, and the family home. Schubert’s photographic exploration of the corporate vernacular elicits a dark humor, of fruitless desperation. Pre-packaged business attire, scuffed carpets, and uncanny corporate tableaus paint a portrait of an underlying irony — a world built on reputation and charisma, at the edges of catastrophe."

"Macquenoise is the bittersweet portrait of a mother and son who live secluded life with only animals for company, at the mercy of the seasons. From this oedipal relationship wells up a violence suffocated by a state of immobility. Sometimes,  a look seems to be a cry for help, a warning that we heed while remaining mute, powerless. Macquenoise might well be the name of a dance of death, the memory of an original sacrifice from the very edge of a horizon that sighs, between light and darkness. But it is a village on the fringes of Belgium, on the French frontier. We see there the shadow of the mother, planted  like a knobby oak-tree, and that of the limping son. Two characters so deeply engrained in the earth they live on that they have taken root there forever."

"Fifteen days have passed since I’ve cut the big cherry tree at the bottom of the field. I had to cut the tree, it was casting too much shadow on the potato plot. Yesterday I glanced down to the stacked branches and I noticed they carried on living, swelling buds, pushing out bunches of flowers. Regardless. Life never stops. Presumptuous deity of my eyes, I see the cherry branches will dry out soon, cut off from the roots. This predictiveness bothers me." Marzabotto teaches us the embarrassment of looking at each other as of today. The only relief is to gaze, without presuming, without knowing."

“…a strange breed. It’s the mountain and the sea. People down here don’t need human interaction so much.”

And even as a Eurocentric aesthetic continues to predominate, a frantic, rearguard mood has become apparent among the city’s whites. With every passing summer, Cape Town’s non-whites become more and more visible, assertive and numerous. It’s not difficult to envision the city as it appears through feverish eyes: a citadel under siege, a dwindling outpost of civilization. And there’s no doubt where the ultimate stand in defense of the old life will—must—be made: the slopes of Table Mountain. As one local told a newspaper reporter, “People have come to accept that you can be mugged in town or on the road but the mountain is somehow seen as sacrosanct. For me as a Buddhist it’s my temple, my soul food.”

"The images in this book are of small porcelain portraits affixed to headstones in cemeteries in China, worn away by the passage of time and the ravages of weather. Vince Aletti says that, in aggregate, Ad Infinitum “is about the fugitive nature of portraiture, the impossibility of creating a final likeness. I just love looking at anonymous faces. Most of them are less here than gone, evoking thoughts of how we try, unsuccessfully, to fix people’s images in our minds. The book is beautifully and very simply designed, with the images given generous borders on pages that are evenly divided between black and white. It’s a simple yet lovely book.”

"I often ponder life and death. I decompose the pieces, dismantle elements in an attempt to rationally analyse them and then recompose and reconstruct the fragments, only to end up with a different equation each time. You need the right place to reflect and Greenland was that place for me. Life and death, black and white, opposing dichotomies revealing all their ruthlessness. In Greenland nature takes possession of rationality and gives a meaning to daily life. Greenland narrates a deafening silence. A voice whispering indefinable and inscrutable emotions. In Greenland one doesn’t live, at best one survives."

"Optical Soliloquy. Removed from sight but subjected to the intensity of visibility. This paradox could serve as an introduction into Michel Mazzoni’s world. Everything seems to have disappeared there; beings leave only traces of their passage, or when they do appear, the concealment of the—always female—faces in this feigned indifference provides the screen onto which desire can be projected. This is as much a journey of initiation as it is an escape into memory, with its images of transcursion and what is traversed: a path, corridor, footpath, an opening, stairs, gaps and roads. They are always mental images, in black and iridescent, sometimes even blinding white—images which come to us after an effort, such as a race or the search for oneself."

"While still an art student, Liam worked as an assistant for Amsterdam gallery Annet Gelink. During his work shifts at Frieze Art Fair, he couldn't help noticing the girl working at the booth right in front of his. The result is a collection of images that reflect the activity taking place at the booths during such an art fair, besides being a voyeuristic self-portrait of the artist himself—a reflection from the booth in front. With a text by gallerist Annet Gelink (Liam's employer back then), titled 'Never ask an artist to be your gallery assistant'."

"‘Direction of Travel’ documents a landscape still in transition on the periphery of London’s Olympic Park. Using photographs and found ephemera from the streets of east London, the body of work questions the commonly accepted narrative and seeks to distance itself from the communal endorphins supplied by the transitory Olympic spectacle. It attempts to grapple with the everyday and the commonplace, and explores the complex relationship between the landscape and its inhabitants during a time of radical change."

"State of Mind is a photographic series, and ultimately a book, about the individual quality of mysterious strangers. The images were captured over a period of several years traveling in countries such as Japan, Portugal, Hungary, Malaysia, Spain, South-Korea, Romania, Russia, Taiwan - and what emerged is a visual narrative on the poetic quality of individuality and what it means to be lost in thoughts.  The State of Mind series is about the “thinking moments” and the uncertain atmosphere surrounding the people and places encountered on the way."
