"Portraits by Waiters contains images of Sveinn Fannar Jóhannsson posing in front of his own camera in different rooms, on different occasions. When reading the photos one will follow his private daily life and may soon notice that he appears as bored, isolated and eager at the same time. In his exploration of photography as a means of documentation and the contemporary use and status of the medium, Jóhannsson has created a visual diary of himself."

"Walking in rural and urban landscapes can be compared to peeling back layers of a life and its accumulated experiences and conversations. Perhaps the paths, tracks and pavements we walk on are the traces and routes of earlier marking and re-creation, offering themselves to a trail of almost limitless reinvented narratives. As we tramp our different paths we are also exploring our personal archives as a means of relating our own memories and histories to the spaces we walk in."

"An incident that happened in the end of XVI century Russia became a starting point for this work: Tsarevich Dimitry, the last son of Ivan the Terrible, died under mysterious circumstances from a knife wound to his throat, with people speculating on the possible various causes for his death. Historians are still trying to find the guilty party 400 years later in order to put an end to this confusing historical detective story. I was intrigued by how images of the past can reform in our minds today."

"Atlantis by Pedro Ramos is an exercise in dismantling the simple linear notion of time. Its subject is the implosion of the Atlantis hotel in Madeira Island, built in 1972 to capitalize on the burgeoning tourism industry, it was demolished in 2000 to make way for the expanding airport. The implosion was barely a footnote in history."

"Das Tor von Elea (The Gate Of Elea) is made of photographs of the frame of a rusty, eroded gate that I found at the foot of the ruins of the ancient greek city of Elea. For me, it's kind of a self-portrait of the surrounding volcanic landscape of the Cilento (Southern Italy), and surprisingly associated with the work of Parmenides of Elea, the greek philosopher, who lived and taught here once. "The images in this book were made during a 2 week trip to Japan - to me a totally fascinating but equally strange and enigmatic country, where I don't speak the language and cannot even read a sign. I felt forlorn and alienated while at the same time enjoying the state of being lost. The word „Tobiko“ means „flying fish roe“, which was one of the very few words I could speak and which also happens to be one of my favourite types of sushi."

Not merely because I curated it, but mainly due to the fact that I was a witness to its genesis in London some years ago. An area that I knew fairly well, as I had lived there many years previously, one that is so skillfully recounted in David’s hundreds of shots; it was during those days spent with David in the London spring, discussing his work about the modern city until the early hours and strolling through the suburbs, that we laid the foundations for the dialogue that has brought us thus far." - Steve Bisson

Afterglow
by Jaclyn Wright
published in collaboration with Everything Is Collective
70 Pages, 8.5"x11"
Digital Offset
Edition of 200
$35
"In Afterglow, artist Jaclyn Wright explores the ever expanding edges of our universe. Many of the phenomena integral to our model of the universe, such as black holes, gamma ray bursts, dark matter and dark energy, have not been seen - either because they are not visible at optical wavelengths or simply because the universe is too vast for us to happen to be looking at the right place at the right time. The images contained within AFTERGLOW offer not only a symbolic representation of these phenomena but have been organized by processes similar to those responsible for generating such phenomena in the first place - heat, density, mass, time. Afterglow is compact, orientable, spacelike."

"This book is born during one of those autumn evenings in which time seems to be melting in a cup of tea and the sun sets just after midday. The title is shocking but it’s probably one of the first words a child learns after “mum”, it was in fact my intention to desecrate with a smile this coercive and nearly violent body censorship, particularly regarding a part which is by no means pornographic or immoral."

"Skudžinskas' creative methodics and philosophy can be identified as a certain metaphysics of photography or even radiology of photography. He has no interest in the image as such; what is central in his work is the innards of the image, the underlying principles of its functioning, or its placement in a wider contextual system. Skudžinskas often abandons any physical artefacts of photography entirely by substituting them with the signs of a different kind-for example, texts." - Jurij Dobriakov

"The photographs in the book depict the office workplace, an environment where there is an emphasis on worker productivity. What is evident however, is that workers continually struggle to fit into this rigid framework, adopting strategies to effectively navigate the working world. Some of these strategies are at odds with the pursuit of productivity, and could be seen (by the company) as ‘time-wasting activity', or distraction from achieving objectives."

"This project focuses on the concept of home understood not as a physical place but rather as state of mind.According to this vision the dim light becomes a headlight that indicates the direction to find the way back home."

"Shot in vibrant colours and graphically composed images, Tokyo Chroma reflects on symbols of Japanese contemporary culture touching on numerous topics and playfully exploring the illusionistic possibilities of photography. The photographs capture everyday scenes, people and views of Tokyo through the use of a digital aesthetic referencing the flatness of Japanese arts and graphics ranging from the Ukiyo-e prints to the manga and anime culture."

"This series is an imaginative journey into the space where human form intertwines with untamed forces of nature constituting forever indissoluble and continuous unity. This collection of photos is a visual poem that creates a subjective metaphor for the sublime world that underlies life of every creature on Earth – inner dormant volcanoes, energy of growth, resilience to outer forces and also a drive to inevitable death."

"Lookbook, where I use my mother's old clothes, 1990s' cosmetics and grandmother's fabrics as a background, has grown out of a desire to restore the images of women of elder generations in the family. But eventually it has turned into a story about the search for my own femininity and sexuality, my first idea of which was formed by Soviet fashion magazines. Working on this project, I reconstructed a girl's ritual of fitting her mother's dresses, trying to rethink childish experience already in adulthood, when I’m approaching the age when my mother gave birth to me."

Pick the book on the blue side and you’ll turn into “Le Poinçonneur d’Hibiya”, and visit the life underground. Turn the book on the red side and you’ll find yourself upstairs, in the digital sensuality of downtown Tokyo. It’s up to you to decide where it all starts and ends."
